Gaga's involvement with the research firm was first revealed in her November 2025 Rolling Stone cover story, in which Polansky said, "It was her idea. She's officially on the board of directors, but they've kepy her name out of it until now. The attention that Stefani's involvement would bring wasn't necessary – it's not consumer-facing. ... Gaga, Polansky and the Outer Bio team are taking the project public now because of its large volume of scientific data and confidence in the project's impacts on the future of skincare.
What is Outer Bio?
According to its website, Outer Bio pairs "machine learning with full-thickness human skin that stays alive for weeks." Its goal is to discover and validate skin mechanisms and bioactives through human tissue testing. Chronic inflammation, aging-associated tissue remodeling and environmental stress are some of the skin tissue dysfunctions Outer Bio models. The company acquires its skin samples from donors of all genders, races, ages and parts of the body, and samples are de-identified from their donors by the time Outer Bio has them.
The company is unique with its innovative discovery platform YUNA, which unites living human skin tissue, automated in vitro screening and biomedical AI to discover new molecules and mechanisms to advance skin health. This technology allows tissue to stay alive for more than 30 days, compared to conventional ex vivo tissue that lasts about a week once separated from its source. This is extremely beneficial because, by prolonging the tissue's lifespan, Outer Bio scientists can student the impacts various stressors like UV exposure/damage, barrier disruptions, allergens and wounds have on the sample over time.
Sunburn is an example of what the expanded lifespan helps Outer Bio's team to research. Polansky told TechCrunch that researchers can induce UV damage in the living tissue, then track stress, inflammatory and recover-related responses through the course of the month. They do not seek to heal the skin sample; rather, they're interested in watching the injury and the tissue's natural biological response.
Gaga sits on the platform's Board of Directors alongside Polansky, who is also the chief executive officer, and Sara Choi.
Machine Learning & AI
Outer Bio's discovery engine incorporates machine-learning AI models trained on millions of data points. It is important to distinguish that this type of AI does not have the same negative impacts as generative AI – where generative AI creates brand new content like images and videos, machine learning refers to computers and technology analyzing existing datasets to learn patterns and make predictions.
Outer Bio screens 750 million compounds annually, with more than 30,000 multi-modal data points per compound. This means that last year alone, Outer Bio screened more than 22 quadrillion data points. Its machine-learning model also checks samples for efficacy and safety.
With its vast collection of data points, the company generates a new, viable molecular candidate every six weeks. The AI model predicts which chemicals are likely to have a positive effect on a particular tissue function. The results are then fed back into the model, which broadens its dataset and allows for more precise predictions as time progresses.
To further secure donor privacy, Outer Bio's closed AI model runs on the its own internal servers without using third-party processors or platforms. Moreover, it does not pay expressly for the donated samples, only for the transportation of the samples to its offices.
The Future of Skin Health and Dermatology
Ultimately, Outer Bio's goal is to create a predictive AI model that operates at a high-level of precision, allowing it to predict which molecules will work on living skin tissue before any lab experimentation is done, thus exponentially speeding up the process. Then, the discovered compounds will be used in purchasable cosmetic products.
Outer Bio does not seek to manufacture drugs or products to combat skin ailments. Instead, it is discoveirng cosmetic ingredients that will serve a beneficial effect in skincare products. According to TechCrunch, the firm plans to sell its ingredients to relevant outlets that will use them in their own skincare products. Some of these ingredients are likely to appear in Haus Labs cosmetic and skincare products once their viability is proven.
Next, the company will hire a specialized product development team to aid in figuring out the best way to formulate and supply the cosmetic ingredients to cosmetic manufacturers and retailers.

On his introduction to Gaga:
Having been a fan since "Just Dance," Madeon revealed Gaga was his dream collaborator. Following his 2012 set at Lollapalooza, he was approached by Gaga's team about the possibility of him opening for her on the Born This Way Ball. He agreed, but under the condition that she listens to one of his demos for her next album. Music& Audio
The instrumental he sent was called "Revenge," but he was initially apprehensive that he'd send something too "edgy." He said, "She's always been an artist with this experimental dimension, and I thought if I sent her something generic that could work with someone else, it wouldn't be interesting. So for me, I thought this could be our starting point together."
On producing for "ARTPOP":
That demo ended up being the foundation of "Mary Jane Holland." Gaga personally called him to let him know she loved the track and had already written lyrics to it. She insisted they meet, and they finally did in September 2012 after Gaga's Born This Way Ball performance at the Stade de France. Madeon revealed that after the show, they went back to her hotel, where she had a grand piano. She had the chorus to "Gypsy" but nothing else, so Madeon sat at the piano and started to play. He said "something kind of magical happened" as they composed the rest of the song together, and the next night, they recorded it.
For "Venus," his other ARTPOP contribution, he had already composed the basic instrumental track, but he passed it on to Gaga who added more acoustic elements against his heavy electronic ones. Being a teen-aged producer at the time, he said Gaga made him feel understood and taken seriously in the way she valued and used his ideas.
"It was a really interesting collaboration on the three 'ARTPOP' tracks. It was very different because on 'Mary Jane' she really quoted my production and wrote over it. On 'Venus,' there was the track, I produced it, and then she added her own layer as producer. And on 'Gypsy,' there was already a chorus, and then we composed the rest together, and I produced it."
Madeon continued to praise Gaga's music-making ability, saying, "She writes all the melodies, the lyrics, she doesn't have a team of songwriters, she does it all herself. She has real production ideas and really respects the people she works with."
Knowing Gaga worked on plenty of songs during the ARTPOP era, host Guillaume Moglia resurfaced her 2012 tweet mentioning "Tinnitus" in hopes of getting more information, but Madeon shut it down: "Out of respect ... I figure if it's not something that's been released, something that's official, well, it's not my project, it's not my album. ... There have been a lot of tracks that were made for the album, some released, some not."
On producing "911" for "Chromatica":
Madeon also detailed how he ended up contributing to "911." Chromatica producer BloodPop had reached out after being stuck on "911," feeling like the production was "rudimentary." As soon as Madeon heard it, he said he knew "what it need[ed] to be," and the next day, he had a "vey emotional" reconnection with Gaga at the studio to finish what would become the album version of the song.
He said it was cool to reconnect with Gaga because she's "very, very loyal" to the people she works with: "There's still a link, it's really a connection," he said. "And that's why I connect with her, because I don't feel like I'm working with a brand, you know?"

Madeon worked on several fan-favorites from 2013's ARTPOP, including "Venus" and "Gypsy". He also worked on "911" from Chromatica, and recently reunited with Gaga at the MAYHEM Requiem premiere in Los Angeles. Excerpts from the interview are below.
On collaborating with Gaga:
"I think she was pop in the terms of skill and reach, but she was also a dance artist. She had a real understanding of the culture and a real appetite for it. I was a mega Gaga fan and she was the one artist I wanted to work with. When that came about, it was such a dream. It was my first time in a big studio and on a project of that scale. But she was distinctly great because she's really knowledgeable and she makes. She has ownership over it; she's a maker. Some artists are brilliant at creating a system around them that hopefully creates great art, but they feel more like a manager of it. But no, she does; she makes.
She also really respects collaborators deeply. She both was protective in some ways, but also very respectful of my artistic maturity even though I was so young. She had great advice and witnessing the process was so awesome. It was a very tightly knit group. She would come to the studio everyday and wrote all the lyrics and melodies. But she really respected producers, and there were only a few of us. It really felt like a community. I think it changed my perspective on so many things. We got to reunite a little bit on Chromatica and throughout the years, and even recently."
On working on ARTPOP and the album's reception:
"I love the way the reception to ARTPOP has evolved because we cared so much. Obviously it was a successful album, but the way people appreciate it today is so different. I think people viewed it comparatively to the aesthetic of its time and felt like it wasn't matching that exactly as a dance record. Now what's really distinct and unique about it becomes more apparent as time has gone on, and you can see how different it actually was from other contemporary work. Its distinctiveness is now unmistakable. I love meeting people, especially people who were a few years younger than me—I mean I was only like 18 when I worked on that—so people that were like 14 when that came out, and to them that was the defining Gaga moment; their awakening to pop music. Hearing about the album from their perspective is really great. It really moves me. So I'm glad people like ARTPOP, because I love ARTPOP. It's great to listen to it in 2026."
On working on "911" from Chromatica:
"The song already existed and was written. They were trying to figure out the production, so Michael [Bloodpop] and I were chatting, and he was showing me the song and trying to get my opinion on it. The production hadn't been fully formed, and so I came in and worked on it. It was very obvious, like I listened to it and was like, this is what it needs; shift the melody right there, these are the drums I think it needs. It was very quick. It's one of these great things, where I think I have a solution. If it's the right one, then it's going to be easy but meaningful. So I made that version and then went to the studio with Gaga to record the vocals. I hadn't seen her in a while and it was really cool to reconnect back then. I could see and feel that the song was really special. She had written something really special. I was really happy that the song landed where I thought it should land. That was meaningful to me on a few different levels, both on a personal level and a musical level. I'm glad people like the song. I like the song."

On "Bloody Mary" going viral:
Gaga said "Bloody Mary," a deep cut on her 2011 album "Born This Way," was "too weird and too hard for radio – too much of everything." While she said she doesn't know why the song was used in fan edits, but she expressed gratitude for it, saying, “In the spirit of Wednesday, it’s so cool that an underdog song started racing up the charts when the dance took place. It means a lot to me, because you believe in something that you’ve worked on and you go, ‘This is ahead of its time, so no one might get it now,’ and it actually happens, 10 years later.”
On how "The Dead Dance" came to be:
After "Bloody Mary" went viral, "Wednesday" co-creators and showrunners Miles Millar and Alfred Gough knew they wanted to use one of Gaga's songs for a dance sequence they had planned for the season. Gaga said that once they called her, she immediately knew "The Dead Dance" would be the perfect contribution.
She said of the song's meaning, “The inspiration for ‘The Dead Dance’ was a breakup, and it’s about how we sometimes feel when it’s over — how a relationship ending can kill our ability to feel hopeful about love,” she says. “In the song, I say, ‘I’ll keep on dancing till I’m dead,’ meaning that I’m acknowledging that, and I’m going to keep going. I’m also saying, ‘I’m taking the power back.’”
Corey Baker, the choreographer of the dance, said he freaked out when he learned he'd be choreographing a Gaga song. He said he had just a week to come up with ideas, but the end product turned out great.
On working with Tim Burton:
While Gaga stated the reason she made a special guest appearance in the show as Rosaline Rotwood, a former Nevermore professor, she said, "They asked me if I wanted to be on the show, and I said, 'Absolutely.'"
This means she had the opportunity to work with famed director Tim Burton, who would go on to direct the music video for "The Dead Dance." The two quickly hit it off, as they share the same sense of humor. "I don't know how to explain it, but when you have a kindred, shared interest in this type of artistry, there's a certain vibe – and it's nice," she said.
"To me, when you know that music and pop culture and Tim Burton al come together... that's a very special recipe," she said. "That's why I'm here."

Additionally, Gesaffelstein received the Best Remixed Recording award for his remix of "Abracadabra." Cirkut, credited as a producer on "Abracadabra" and "Disease," won Producer of the Year, Non-Classical.
