Madeon Shares Behind-the-Scenes Details About Making 'ARTPOP' with Lady Gaga
To promote his new album "VICTORY," electronic producer Madeon sat down with POPSLAY to talk about his years-long relationship with Lady Gaga, how they were introduced and how their collaborations – "Mary Jane Holland," "Gypsy," "Venus" and "911" – came to be. Watch the full interview here, and check out the highlights below: On his introduction to Gaga: Having been a fan since "Just Dance," Madeon revealed Gaga was his dream collaborator. Following his 2012 set at Lollapalooza, he was approached by Gaga's team about the possibility of him opening for her on the Born This Way Ball. He agreed, but under the condition that she listens to one of his demos for her next album. Music& Audio The instrumental he sent was called "Revenge," but he was initially apprehensive that he'd send something too "edgy." He said, "She's always been an artist with this experimental dimension, and I thought if I sent her something generic that could work with someone else, it wouldn't be interesting. So for me, I thought this could be our starting point together." On producing for "ARTPOP": That demo ended up being the foundation of "Mary Jane Holland." Gaga personally called him to let him know she loved the track and had already written lyrics to it. She insisted they meet, and they finally did in September 2012 after Gaga's Born This Way Ball performance at the Stade de France. Madeon revealed that after the show, they went back to her hotel, where she had a grand piano. She had the chorus to "Gypsy" but nothing else, so Madeon sat at the piano and started to play. He said "something kind of magical happened" as they composed the rest of the song together, and the next night, they recorded it. For "Venus," his other ARTPOP contribution, he had already composed the basic instrumental track, but he passed it on to Gaga who added more acoustic elements against his heavy electronic ones. Being a teen-aged producer at the time, he said Gaga made him feel understood and taken seriously in the way she valued and used his ideas. "It was a really interesting collaboration on the three 'ARTPOP' tracks. It was very different because on 'Mary Jane' she really quoted my production and wrote over it. On 'Venus,' there was the track, I produced it, and then she added her own layer as producer. And on 'Gypsy,' there was already a chorus, and then we composed the rest together, and I produced it." Madeon continued to praise Gaga's music-making ability, saying, "She writes all the melodies, the lyrics, she doesn't have a team of songwriters, she does it all herself. She has real production ideas and really respects the people she works with." Knowing Gaga worked on plenty of songs during the ARTPOP era, host Guillaume Moglia resurfaced her 2012 tweet mentioning "Tinnitus" in hopes of getting more information, but Madeon shut it down: "Out of respect ... I figure if it's not something that's been released, something that's official, well, it's not my project, it's not my album. ... There have been a lot of tracks that were made for the album, some released, some not." On producing "911" for "Chromatica": Madeon also detailed how he ended up contributing to "911." Chromatica producer BloodPop had reached out after being stuck on "911," feeling like the production was "rudimentary." As soon as Madeon heard it, he said he knew "what it need[ed] to be," and the next day, he had a "vey emotional" reconnection with Gaga at the studio to finish what would become the album version of the song. He said it was cool to reconnect with Gaga because she's "very, very loyal" to the people she works with: "There's still a link, it's really a connection," he said. "And that's why I connect with her, because I don't feel like I'm working with a brand, you know?" Read more about the production of "911" here.

Lady Gaga Discusses 'Bloody Mary' and 'The Dead Dance' With Netflix
More than a decade after its release, Lady Gaga's "Bloody Mary" broke into the mainstream after fans of Netflix's "Wednesday" used it in viral edits of the titular character, played by Jenna Ortega. It got so big that Gaga contributed another song, "The Dead Dance," to the soundtrack of the show's second season, and she even appeared in a special guest role in the series. Gaga spoke with TUDUM by Netflix to recap her experience with the show. Read some highlights from the interview below, or read the full interview here. On "Bloody Mary" going viral: Gaga said "Bloody Mary," a deep cut on her 2011 album "Born This Way," was "too weird and too hard for radio – too much of everything." While she said she doesn't know why the song was used in fan edits, but she expressed gratitude for it, saying, “In the spirit of Wednesday, it’s so cool that an underdog song started racing up the charts when the dance took place. It means a lot to me, because you believe in something that you’ve worked on and you go, ‘This is ahead of its time, so no one might get it now,’ and it actually happens, 10 years later.” On how "The Dead Dance" came to be: After "Bloody Mary" went viral, "Wednesday" co-creators and showrunners Miles Millar and Alfred Gough knew they wanted to use one of Gaga's songs for a dance sequence they had planned for the season. Gaga said that once they called her, she immediately knew "The Dead Dance" would be the perfect contribution. She said of the song's meaning, “The inspiration for ‘The Dead Dance’ was a breakup, and it’s about how we sometimes feel when it’s over — how a relationship ending can kill our ability to feel hopeful about love,” she says. “In the song, I say, ‘I’ll keep on dancing till I’m dead,’ meaning that I’m acknowledging that, and I’m going to keep going. I’m also saying, ‘I’m taking the power back.’” Corey Baker, the choreographer of the dance, said he freaked out when he learned he'd be choreographing a Gaga song. He said he had just a week to come up with ideas, but the end product turned out great. On working with Tim Burton: While Gaga stated the reason she made a special guest appearance in the show as Rosaline Rotwood, a former Nevermore professor, she said, "They asked me if I wanted to be on the show, and I said, 'Absolutely.'" This means she had the opportunity to work with famed director Tim Burton, who would go on to direct the music video for "The Dead Dance." The two quickly hit it off, as they share the same sense of humor. "I don't know how to explain it, but when you have a kindred, shared interest in this type of artistry, there's a certain vibe – and it's nice," she said. "To me, when you know that music and pop culture and Tim Burton al come together... that's a very special recipe," she said. "That's why I'm here."

Lady Gaga Talks 'Harlequin Live' With Variety
After last week's in-theater premiere of "Harlequin Live: One Night Only" at Los Angeles' Grammy Museum, Lady Gaga is releasing the special performance special this Christmas Eve. Ahead of its release, she sat down with Variety's Chris Willman to talk about the new film, which she calls "a Christmas present." "I'm feeling like: Why not?" Gaga told Willman, regarding the release date of the special filmed last September. "We have this thing that's sop special to us, so we're just really happy to share it with the fans. It's kind of a rebellious project. And, by Harlequin standards, Christmas is the perfect time to release something rebellious." Gaga revealed she meant to only perform three songs as a "celebration after the premiere of 'Joker,'" but she and her fiancé, Michael Polansky, decided to do the whole album just a few days before. She tapped Marcell Rév, the director of photography for the "Disease" music video to help with production design: "And once everything came together with the production design, it really came together because of the album art that we shot in Las Vegas while we were there finishing the record, where it was all shot in this dingy apartment. And when I met the guys that I made the record with, some of them 20 years ago, I was living in a dingy apartment on the Lower East Side. That's where I had all my crazy ideas about anything. So that's how the emotional and raw quality of how we made it made its way into this performance," she said. She continued to give props to Michael. She said she loves "that he has this closeness with me where he sees my artistry and my musicianship in its infancy, in its raw form." Despite the mere few-day window between the decision to perform "Harlequin" in full and the taping date, Gaga said she never felt unprepared or unrehearsed. "The point of the whole thing was to capture it in its rawness with all of the fabric of emotional jazz music. So, no, we didn't prepare that much. But in a way, I had been preparing for this for years." She discussed "Happy Mistake," one of two original songs on the project. She said the song was inspired by a time in her life when "it felt like being happy would be an accident, it felt so impossible." She continued, saying the gift for herself in doing the performance made her "so happy." Aside from "Harlequin Live," Gaga also discussed the album's nomination for Best Traditional Pop Album, her first time being nominated for the award on her own. Previously, she won the award twice with Tony Bennett, for both "Cheek to Cheek" and "Love for Sale": "I'm not in the category alone, I don't feel, because I guess I'll always feel like Tony is with me in the category," she said. Variety confirmed that Bennett does have a small cameo in "Harlequin Live," in a way. During her performance of "Smile," a black-and-white TV plays a repairing loop of Bennett, who loved the original version of the song by Charlie Chaplin. Gaga said it wasn't meant to be a memorial, but a moment to bring "a little bit of the real world, with a little bit of a wink" to the performance. Plus, after first confirming to Zane Lowe her work on new music in various hotel rooms across the world, Gaga further detailed the process. She and Michael set up a piano and a mic in every room, and whenever it feels like a good time to make music, "we just do it." "I take care of myself as much as I can on the road, and I'm finding that that's leading to a lot of songwriting, which is the best," she said. "Harlequin Live: One Night Only" premieres on Lady Gaga's YouTube channel at 4 p.m. PST on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2025. Read the entire interview with Variety here.
