In a new interview with Billboard, Lady Gaga shares the process of making her latest studio album "MAYHEM," her connection with Little Monsters and the success of "Die With A Smile."
Talking about the weight of expectations, Gaga said:
“Ever since my first album, I listened to what people would say. ‘Will she outdo herself? Can she top herself? Can she live up to this? She needs to evolve; she hasn’t changed enough.’ There was a lot of noise.”
Speaking about co-executive producer Andrew Watt and collaborators like Cirkut and Gesaffelstein, she added:
“I think what I look for in collaborators are people who will uplift me as a woman in the studio and follow my vision. I tried, musically, to work with people with whom I could push myself—so that it wouldn’t be exactly what you’ve heard from me before, but there is the DNA of my approach to pop music.”

Nothing was off the table in Lady Gaga's interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, where she talked about what "MAYHEM" means to her and described some of her soon-to-be-released new songs.
Watch the video interview below, and read some of the highlights beneath:
On "MAYHEM":
Gaga described "MAYHEM" as her favorite record in a long time. "I feel like it has some teeth," she said.
She talked about how she was able to be a student on music with "MAYHEM," which allowed her to figure out her own personal mayhem. The album was inspired out of loving music and sounds that she studied for at least a decade, allowing her to embrace the mayhem of being a nonlinear, cross-genre artist who combines a lot of things at once.
"'ARTPOP' was a vibe. 'Joanne' was a sound, 'Chromatica' had a sound, all different. 'The Fame Monster' was more chaotic, 'The Fame' was theatrical pop, 'Born This Way' to me had more of a metal-electro-New York vibe to it, so I actually made the effort making 'MAYHEM' to not do that and not try to give my music an outfit, but instead to allow myself to be influenced by everything," she explained.
"It's completely me, and it's my gift to my fans," she said.
Touching on the success of "Abracadabra," Gaga said she thinks the song is very much her sound, something that she honed in after many years.
She said part of what made its music video so special was the community it fostered: "I spent real time learning that choreography, working with Parris [Goebel] and working with those dancers, and I got to. be in their community while we made it, and I felt like I belonged. That feeling made me so happy."
She went into detail on some of the new songs on the album, as well.
She revealed that "Perfect Celebrity" was the working title of the album before it was "MAYHEM." "Perfect Celebrity," the song, is a 90s-inspired "electro-grunge" track about how she dealt with the anger she felt toward herself as it relates to the desire for fame.
While the song is "super angry," she also described it as humorous, specifically the lyrics: "I've become a notorious being . Find my clone, she's asleep on the ceiling."
"It's almost comical, this idea that any time I'm in the room wit anyone, there's me, Stefani, and Lady Gaga asleep on the ceiling, and I have to figure out which body to be in," she said.

"Shadow of a Man," the song teased at the end of "GAGA Chromatica Ball," is a defiant, fun and powerful song about being a woman in music.
"That song is so much ha response to my career and what it always felt like to be the only girl in the room a lot of the time, and to always be standing in the shadow of a man, because there were so many around me that I learned how to dance in that shadow," she described.
"The Beast," the 12th track on the album, takes the perspective of someone singing to their werewolf lover, but Gaga said it can be applied to her relationship with her fiancé Michael, as well as her relationship to who she is on stage.
"It's somebody that is saying to the beast, 'I know you're a monster but I can handle you, and I love you,'" she said.

"Blade of Grass" calls back to her relationship with Michael. She described how she told him she'd marry him if he proposed with a blade of grass, and she detailed how they built a friendship over how to share one another's mayhem.
"My home used to only be the stage. It was so lonely, and also, it is so much more fun to take somebody out there with you, someone that loves you, that knows what you're capable of in all the various aspects of life," she said.
In terms of other songs, Gaga revealed "Garden of Eden" is a 2000s throwback and webstore-exclusive track "Can't Stop The High" is "a pure electro-grunge record that goes even harder than 'Perfect Celebrity' does." Lowe said "Zombieboy" is "crazy fun."
At the end of the interview, Gaga said she feels like she's firing on all cylinders, and she revealed she has a desire to tour "MAYHEM" after her performance at Coachella next month.

Just one day after releasing her seventh studio album "MAYHEM," Lady Gaga is doing double duty on the March 8 episode of "Saturday Night Live," marking her second time hosting and fifth time performing on the regular show.
To celebrate, take a look back at each of Gaga's “SNL" appearances, from her first 30 Rock performance in 2009 to her recent outing at the show's 50th anniversary concert special.

October 3, 2009: Season 35, Episode 2
Gaga first appeared on "SNL" a month before the release of "The Fame Monster," when she was the musical guest on an episode hosted by Ryan Reynolds.
She performed four songs: "Paparazzi," "LoveGame," an acoustic rendition of "Bad Romance" and a version of "Poker Face" with updated, New York-inspired lyrics.
However, Gaga arguably stole the show when she appeared in a sketch with Madonna. The two fought, throwing insults at one another on a mock talk show. One of Madonna's lines, "I have hundreds of hits, you only have two" surely didn't age well.

She appeared in one more sketch, centering around "SNL" cast member Andy Samberg realizing they're wearing the same outfit.

May 21, 2011: Season 36, Episode 22
Gaga's next performance on the show was to promote "Born This Way," and she appeared in a couple sketches, as well.
First, she appeared in the "Liquorville" sketch, where she and host Justin Timberlake co-opted Kristin Wiig's attempt to get customers into her store. She appeared in another sketch with Timberlake, where they had to guess a series of mystery images.

For performances, Gaga did a medley of "The Edge of Glory" and "Judas" for her first song, and "Born This Way" as her second.
In addition to the live taping, Gaga appeared in a digital sketch with Samberg and Timberlake to debut their now-classic collaboration, "3-Way (The Golden Rule)." The song was later released on an album by The Lonely Island, Samberg's comedy band.
"3-Way (The Golden Rule)" scored a nomination for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics at the 2011 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, but ultimately lost to TImberlake's musical monologue from the same episode.

November 16, 2013: Season 39, Episode 6
Gaga's first double-duty appearance premiered less than a week after the release of "ARTPOP." She performed three of the album's tracks: a jazzy rendition of "Applause" during her opening monologue, and "Do What U Want" with guest R. Kelly and "Gypsy" for her official performances.

One of Gaga's many skits of the episode was "Waking Up with Kimye," where she played a nerdy Apple Store employee being interviewed by Kim Kardashian (Nasim Pedrad) and Kanye West (Jay Pharaoh) on their mock talk show. The sketch features Gaga's iconic line, "People who try too hard with their outfits are maybe hiding something."
Other skits include "4th Grade Talent Show," where Gaga inadvertently performed a striptease in front of an unsuspecting audience, and "Spotlightz Acting Camp for Serious Kids," where she and the cast parodied scenes from acclaimed film and television shows like "Forrest Gump" and "Breaking Bad."
Gaga's other sketches this episode include:
"Worst Cover Songs of All Time": Gaga is supposed to sing of Madonna's "Express Yourself," but sings "Born This Way" instead.
"Co-op Board": Gaga is a tenant who questions prospective new tenants who wish to move into her building.
"Blockbusters": Gaga appears to Blockbuster employees in their dreams.
"Old Lady Gaga": Playing herself as a 77 year old, Gaga tries to woo the maintenance man who has never heard of her.
"Female Sea Captains" (cut for time): Gaga and an array of "SNL" women set off on a journey of mermen and sea shanties.

October 22, 2016: Season 42, Episode 4
Gaga was absent in sketches during her fourth appearance on the show, but she performed "A-YO" and a beautiful rendition of "Million Reasons" in her signature "Joanne"-era pink cowgirl hat.

October 21, 2023: Season 49, Episode 2
Gaga made a special appearance to introduce Bad Bunny's first performance on his 2023 double-duty episode. Bad Bunny has discussed his love for Gaga before, so her introduction came as a pleasant surprise to him.

February 14, 2025: "SNL50: The Homecoming Concert"
"SNL" hosted a concert to celebrate its 50th anniversary, and Gaga was one of the featured performers. She reunited with Andy Samberg to give a hilarious performance: After Samberg botched Bradley Cooper's part of "Shallow," he and Gaga paid tribute to The Lonely Island to perform new versions of their "SNL" tracks "Dick in a Box" and "Motherlover." The two were joined by stars like Chris Parnell, T-Pain and Bad Bunny.
Later, Gaga performed a solo version of "Shallow," for real this time.
Be sure to watch Lady Gaga on "Saturday Night Live" at 11:30 p.m. EST this Saturday, March 8, on NBC.

Lady Gaga and Spotify's Head of Global Editorial Sulinna Ong sat down for InStyle to talk about the upcoming Little Monster Press Conference, a fan-only event where Little Monsters can ask her anything.
Gaga also dished on the creative process behind "Mayhem" and teased lyrics to two new songs.
To read the interview in its entirety, click here. You can find highlights below.
Gaga said that since the beginning of her career, community has been most important to her. The reason she wanted to do the press conference with Spotify was give her fan community a special opportunity to ask anything they may have wondered in the past two decades.
"Feel free to ask me whatever you want!," she said. "We've been in this public conversation for a long time and I'm just so excited to talk to you."
She went on to explain how she thinks some fans have missed her style of a "dark pop album," and she looks forward to putting "Mayhem" out because releasing an album allows an artist to reconnect with fans: "I made this for them."
Calling the album a "return to an earlier process," Gaga revealed that "Mayhem" mixes live instrumentation and programming, which allowed her and her team of collaborators – Andrew Watt, Cirkut and Gesaffelstein – to create unique, never-before-heard sounds.
Genre did not play as significant a role in the writing and recording process for "Mayhem" as it did in her other musical projects the past decade. "I would get seduced by making the album kind of homogenous, or on-theme. ... On 'Mayhem,' it was the opposite. I instead decided to allow myself the freedom to be chaotic with the genres and be chaotic with the choices as a way of celebrating the type of musician that I am."
Gaga said "Mayhem" is a bunch of twisted, gothic dreams: "Some are true and some are not true, but they're somehow related to life."
She cited "The Beast," the album's 12th song, as an example. The song, which she described as "me singing to a werewolf," features the lyrics: "You can't hide who you are, 11:59, your heart's racin', you're growling, and we both know why."
She explained, "Somehow that gothic dream is not just about me in a relationship wit this person that's about to turn, but what if I was to just sing it to myself and the beast is Gaga?"
The concept of duality is explored through the "Mayhem" era, from the multiple Gagas in the music videos for "Disease" and "Abracadabra" to the album track "Perfect Celebrity."
Gaga expanded this duality by sharing a lyric from the upcoming song: "I've become a notorious being, find my clone, she's asleep on the ceiling."
"It's the idea that we all, in a way, have our real selves and then our clone version that we project to the world," she explained. "So there's a lot in 'Mayhem' about multiple yous or multiple mes and what it's like to have those things be at odds with each other all the time."

With two weeks until the release of "Mayhem," Lady Gaga announced she will hold a first-of-a-kind press conference in conjunction with Spotify on March 6.
The catch? Journalists aren't invited – the press conference will be exclusively for and with fans.

Spotify Presents: Little Monster Press Conference will invite Gaga's top Spotify listeners in New York City to ask her about any and everything before dancing the night away to "Mayhem" in full.
"I want you to ask me every burning desire of a question that you have," Gaga said in a video posted to Spotify's social media. "I can''t wait to celebrate 'Mayhem' with you, to talk about music, to talk about life. Whatever you want... (kind of)."
The press conference will be simulcast on Spotify's Instagram, TikTok and YouTube accounts at 6 p.m. EST on March 6 for those not based in New York.

Lady Gaga took a lie detector test for Vanity Fair. You can watch the video below, and find some of her confessions afterward.
Right off the bat, Gaga was asked about the long-awaited sequel to the "Telephone" music video, which ended with a "To be continued..." message. Gaga confirmed the sequel will be released, but she doesn't know when.
When asked if Beyoncé will appear in the video, Gaga coyly answered "maybe," and she quickly confirmed the years-long delay was not due to scheduling conflicts with Beyoncé.
When asked for an update on Jo Calderone, Gaga's male alter ego who debuted in the video for "Yoü and I," Gaga said he is "no longer with us."

Gaga revealed she still has the egg she arrived at the 2011 Grammy Awards in, and that she keeps it in her archive. Then, when asked about the time she asked Cher to hold her meat purse at the Grammy Awards, Gaga said she believes it brought the two of them closer.
Gaga has been very active on TikTok this era, and since the release of "Abracadabra" and its music video, Gaga has reposted fan videos on a daily basis. She admitted to spending up to four hours on the app in one sitting.
Also, Gaga was able to confirm her performance with Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy for her Holiday Spectacular special did not inspire "3-Way (The Golden Rule)," her collaboration with The Lonely Island and Justin Timberlake for a "Saturday Night Live" digital short.

Lady Gaga joined in the revelry on the 30 Rock stage during “SNL50: The Anniversary Special," which aired live on Peacock.
She kicked off her performance at the piano with Andy Samberg in a "Shallow" parody that quickly pivoted into a duet-medley of the Lonely Island's "Dick in a Box," and "Motherlover." The eccentric sequence concluded with her at center stage sporting a wrapped gift box at her waistline—just like the sketch that the song references.
Later in the evening's proceedings, she closed out the show under the spotlight, with solo version of "Shallow."
This marked the star's fifth time performing on "Saturday Night Live," dating back to her first musical guest spot on October 3, 2009. Her most recent appearance was a cameo on Oct. 21, 2023 when she introduced Bad Bunny, who also rocked the mic during the night's events.
Prior to the night's program, Gaga was spotted outside Radio City Music Hall signing autographs for excited fans.
This SNL outing is the latest in a series of well-received performances from Gaga who, on Sunday, February 9, sang a touching rendition of "Hold My Hand" in a pre-Super Bowl tribute to the victims of the New Orleans attack on New Years Eve.
The Sunday prior saw her and Bruno Mars deliver a duet of "California Dreamin' " at the Grammy's—the same night she debuted her rapidly chart-topping single, "Abracadabra," and the accompanying music video.
“SNL50: The Anniversary Special," was produced by longtime SNL legend Lorne Michaels as well as Gaga's frequent collaborator and friend, Mark Ronson.

Lady Gaga is the latest guest host on First We Feast's Hot Ones. Check out the episode below.
Lady Gaga made an appearance on First We Feasts' "Hot Ones", hosted by Sean Evans. The famous spicy chicken wing challenge navigates Gaga's early career, production and music.
The episode, released on February 13, starts with Gaga speaking about the traits she looks for in music producers following the announcement of her seventh studio album MAYHEM. "Collaboration is super important, childhood spirit and musician ship... Wherever the music is, I'm about it."
The 14-time Grammy Award winner spoke to Evans on writing 'Born This Way' in 10 minutes, where Gaga explains that for a lot of her songs, she hears them very quickly and just follows the sound. "It's a feeling of receiving." Gaga also credits her fans and audience in recognizing a good chorus. "Sometimes I know something's [the chorus] done cause that image feels whole to me, but you really don't know if something is good until the people tell you, and they will tell you."
Midway through the spicy chicken wing challenge, the questions are kicked up a notch. Evans asks Gaga to reflect on her early-career and on-stage memories of performing on the lower east side of New York City. "I remember when me and Lady Starlight were given a residency at the Slipper Room and I was so excited, it was such an honour to be asked to perform there. I remember made my outfit for my Slipper Room show, I sowed it myself. I just look back at that time so fondly" she said.
Evans appreciates Gaga's ability to balance high art and pop, Gaga responds "The music is something that you hear but when you add the art to it, it really changes the way you feel and changes the way you think about the song. It's awesome."
Gaga ends the interview explaining that she always felt tested when facing whether or not she should walk away. "I'm still doing it, so it must mean I wanna do it."
