Lady Gaga and director Ridley Scott have been interviewed by The New York Times, to discuss House of Gucci, the upcoming movie of the director that will star Lady Gaga as the main character.
You can read an excerpt of the interview below:
Talk to me about staying in Patrizia’s accent for so many months. Was that tiring?
GAGA I think it would have done more of a number on me had I not practiced it so much. I would be talking like this with my mother, with friends, so that I, Stefani, could speak like this and it would be totally natural. It’s like muscle memory, so that when you’re in the scene, the accent is not in the way of the visceral quality of what’s happening in the room.
If I had a jazz show next week, if I don’t rehearse ahead of time, my voice is not ready for the show. My approach to this was not different than my commitment to music. But I want to be clear: I don’t think it’s about sensationalizing method acting or being in character as the only way to do things. It would have been harder for me to go in and out of character on set than to stay in it.
Ridley, how did you feel about the box office performance of The Last Duel? It got strong reviews and boasted big stars in Matt Damon and Adam Driver, but still underperformed in theaters.
SCOTT It was exceedingly disappointing. The fatal thing is when you think you’ve got it, you haven’t — I thought I’d got it on Blade Runner and I hadn’t! I was crucified by a big critic at the time called Pauline Kael. It’s why I never read critiques, ever. You have to be your own decider — if you worry about what the audience is thinking and what they may want, that’s fatal. A good film will find itself, and now Blade Runner is in the Library of Congress.
But still, it must add some wind to your sails when people are excited about your work. Even while you were making House of Gucci, the pictures from set caused an online sensation.
SCOTT No, totally. There’s nothing like success to make you feel good in the morning, right? At the same time, if you get some kind of clip or hit, don’t let it get to you. If you like what you did, move on.
GAGA I can’t agree more. When you are making art to please people or seek praise, this is not sustainable. You’re essentially passionate about getting people to love you as opposed to being passionate about the work. I know I lost my way as an artist for a while when I started to care about what would make people like me. Then I rebelled, because why should I follow a North Star that keeps moving?
My whole career, I’ve had ups, I’ve had downs. When you were talking about Blade Runner, I was thinking about my record ARTPOP and how they put out critiques before it even came out. Because of freedom of speech, people can write whatever they want, even if it’s lies, but years later, it’s one of my most critically acclaimed albums.
We have no idea what this movie’s going to do after it opens, but it doesn’t matter because we know we made something great. When you get to be lucky like me and be in one of his movies, you know that no matter what, this is going to last a lifetime.

First official reviews for "House of Gucci" are coming out, following the movie's London premiere. The critics are raving about Gaga's performance, calling it Oscar-worthy.

Lady Gaga's performance got rave reviews from the critics and she enters the Best-Actress race for the upcoming Award season culminating with the Academy Awards in March of 2022.
Vanity Fair: A true standout performance here from Lady Gaga, funny and fearless and—crucially, in a movie prone to losing the thread—completely commanding. She centers, even grounds the movie while having a grand time doing so. Accordingly, she’s firmly in the conversation for a second best-actress nomination, but how far she can go largely depends on the movie around her.
Variety: Gaga checks so many of the boxes of previous Oscar winners for best actress: She’s a beloved pop icon, taking a role that has her playing a sexy, batshit crazy fame and money-seeker. You can just imagine the old-timers saying to each other over cigars, “She’s just like my first wife…”.
Nikki Novak of Critics Choice: Gaga gives more than a performance - she opens a portal... it's mesmerizing! Talk about a 'marriage story' LG & Adam Driver are an EPIC duo!
Joel Nolfi of EW: Lady Gaga's earnest, ferocious performance completes her evolution from movie star to mighty dramatic actrÊss.
Jazz Tangcay of Gold Derby: Lady Gaga is a revelation as Patrizia. She is a tour-de-force and a powerhouse.
Erik Davis of Rotten Tomatoes: "House of Gucci" has a definite GODFATHER vibe, rich w/ family betrayal, transformative performances, lots of backstabbing & it's definitely more serious than it is campy. Lady Gaga is incredible, as is Jared Leto, and the story is WILD! The attention to detail is impeccable.
David Fear of Rolling Stone: It is absolutely criminal how good an actress Lady Gaga is, and how good she is HOUSE OF GUCCI.
Chris Willman of Variety: I loved the mixture of tones in “House of Gucci.” It doesn’t descend into camp (with exception of Jared Leto's performance, which I enjoyed) but it’s having fun with itself, too. Gaga is wonderful. Screenwriter says he was thinking “Sunset Blvd.” from Norma Desmond’s perspective.
Ramin Setoodeh of Variety: "House of Gucci" is like ‘Succession’ meets ‘Nocturnal Animals.’ It will definitely earn Lady Gaga her second Oscar nomination for acting. But the entire ensemble is terrific — Driver, Pacino, Leto, Irons and Hayek, who devours every line of dialogue in the film.
Katie Walsh of LA Times: Lady Gaga's performance in HOUSE OF GUCCI is this alchemy of sheer charisma and presence, power of personality, and commitment to the bit. The way she stares daggers at everyone on screen is terrifying. The more I think about it, the more Patrizia is a true horror villain.
Perri Nemiroff of Collider: Was pretty riveted by the evolution of the Patrizia/Maurizio relationship in House Of Gucci. Extreme ups & downs but thought it had just enough nuance to keep it human. Driver's great but LadyGaga shines especially bright. Leto has moments but feels like he's in a different film.
James Kleinmann of The Queer Review: Lady Gaga elevates the movie with an impeccable performance as Patrizia, & Adam Driver & Gaga make for a great screen pairing.
Chris O'Falt of IndieWire: Big & soapy, this really hit the spot for me. Everything Leto & Pacino do is lol ridiculous, yet nicely balanced with Driver & Gaga’s mannered 50s melodrama turns. Ridley Scott has everyone acting in the same movie, while going big with glorious gusto.

Lady Gaga stuns on the covers of British and Italian Vogue's Issue, photographed by Steven Meisel, revealing more details about the upcoming film House of Gucci.

In the interview for British and Italian Vogue, Gaga discusses her role in House Of Gucci and what it took to bring Patrizia Reggiani to life. She states, "I only felt that I could truly do this story justice if I approached it with the eye of a curious woman who was interested in possessing a journalistic spirit so that I could read between the lines of what was happening in the film’s scenes." She also talks about her method acting and how she achieved the Italian accent by recalling how "[She] lived as [Patrizia] for a year and a half. And [she] spoke with an accent for nine months of that."
As a humorous remark regarding her newly-brunette hair, she said, "It was nearly impossible for me to speak in the accent as a blonde, I instantly had to dye my hair, and I started to live in a way whereby anything that I looked at, anything that I touched, I started to take notice of where and when I could see money."
Gaga also said, "'I became fascinated with the journey of this woman.' She spent more than a year poring over newspaper clippings and recordings of Reggiani, although, tellingly, she did not read Sara Gay Forden’s The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed, the 2000 book on which the film is based. 'I did not want anything that had an opinion that would colour my thinking in any way.'"
It was then revealed that, "[Ridley] Scott originally sent her the script shortly after A Star Is Born, her triumphant arrival as a Hollywood lead, was released, in 2018."

With the release of Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett’s new album, “Love For Sale” on Friday, the pair were featured in a segment on 60 Minutes. This special interview gave fans a look into the making of the new jazz album and behind the scenes of Bennett’s “Final Act”.
Anderson Cooper led the interview as he spoke to Gaga and others about working with Bennett as he battles Alzheimer’s Disease.
News of the legendary jazz singer’s dementia came back in February of this year. Gaga and Bennett released their renditions of classic Cole Porter songs as Bennett’s final album. The duo also performed together in a two-night concert event titled “One Last Time” in New York City. The concerts which were held in August, were the final performances of Bennett’s timeless career.
Gaga spoke to Cooper about the changes she has had to make when interacting with the legendary crooner. She expressed that keeping it simple is important, questions which he could reply with “yes” or “no” were easier for Bennett to answer than asking him which song he’d prefer to sing. Gaga also noted how Bennett would transform when the music would start, he would know exactly what he was doing and she was mindful “not to get in the way of that.”
The "One Last Time" concerts were indeed revealed to be an emotional experience. Footage from the event showed Tony lighting up as soon as the curtains rose. When Gaga made her entrance, he greeted her by saying her name - Gaga later revealed that this was the first time he had done so "in a long time".
One Last Time: An Evening With Lady Gaga & Tony Bennett, the concert filmed at Radio City Music Hall, is set to air Sunday, November 28 @ 8PM ET/PT on CBS.
