Madison Love talks Lady Gaga and Sour Candy with Rolling Stone

Madison Love, one of the main songwriters behind the explosive collaboration between Lady Gaga and BLACKPINK, Sour Candy, recently did an interview with Rolling Stone.  In the interview Love talks about the origins of the track and the behind the scene processes of its making.

Sour Candy arrived a day before Chromatica's release as a surprise release/buzz single. Arguably one of the most anticipated tracks on Chromatica, Sour Candy arrived in the form of a "k-pop basement banger" as Lady Gaga calls it. Moreover, Sour Candy has also been hailed as one of the most prominent collaborations and conjoining of western music and k-pop.

Love revealed that song, when it was first written, had no set artist to take it. However she says she knew it was made to be a Lady Gaga record.

"When Love wrote the first version of “Sour Candy” with producer/writer BloodPop, no artist had dibs on the song yet. But in her heart, she knew it belonged to Lady Gaga. “I love to write theatrical pop,” Love says. “I decided to sing it like Gaga for the demo just in case he wanted to play it for her."

After a while, Love reveals that Bloodpop had called months later saying Gaga wanted to enlist the talent of BLACKPINK's four fierce members on the track.

Love reveals the sheer excitement and emotion she felt while being in the studio with Gaga, and while she has collaborated and worked with many artists, this one felt different to her.

“I work with artists all the time and I don’t get nervous, but she’s just a star to me… She puts it on, and we’re dancing. She’s dancing on me and doing full choreo in the middle of the room. I was so overwhelmed. It was the coolest five minutes of my life.”

She even revealed the comical situation that occurred in her Uber Drive on the way home saying how she was "basically crying on the phone" and how confused the driver was about what had just occurred.

Sour Candy has long been hailed as an album highlight but more importantly as a pop culture highlight as well. Critics praised Gaga and BLACKPINK's duet as an prime example of the greatness that can be achieved when western artists team up with k-pop powerhouses.
